A downloadable larn for Windows and Linux

Larn is a traditional ASCII Roguelike first released in 1986.  This is a continued, updated version that stays true to the original while adding new features to ensure it stays as up to date as possible without destroying the original intent of the game.

You must fight through 10 Levels of Dungeons and 5 levels of Volcano dungeons to get a cure for a disease for your daughter.  If you fail to retrieve the cure within the time given, your daughter will have died and the game will end.  Larn was the first roguelike to ever have a time limit.

The latest version (26.40) has rewritten the rendering engine to a dynamic, real-time engine (but still remaining turn based) as well as dynamic water, lava and improved monster AI.  Colour support is fully implemented and user-customisable.

At 40 years old, Larn is one of the oldest video games still being developed from the original code.  This release honours Larn's 40th Birthday this year!

Install instructions

The Windows binary is self-contained, copy all the files from 'larnfiles' into the same directory as the .exe file and you're good to go.  The WIndows version has 2 binaries (larn.exe - windows console, larn_sdl2 - gui window).

Larn.clr contains colour information that the user can configure as required for objects, monsters and items.
Larnopts is the configuration file, where colour can be turned on / off, etc..

The Linux binary requires the user to have ncurses installed on their linux system.  Then do the same as above.  The file may need to be made executable 'chmod u+x ./larn'.  Otherwise you're good to go.

The github release page (here: https://github.com/atsb/RL_M/releases/tag/26.40) contains many other architectures, as well as DOS and OS/2 versions.
